What an elastic actually does to hair

Cotton and rubber grip the hair shaft and hold it while you move, so every turn of your head pulls at the same few strands. That's where the snapped ends at your hairline come from, and the dent that's still there at six in the evening. Silk has a lower coefficient of friction, so the hair slides under the band instead of being held against it.

Choosing a size

Skinny 3.5 suits fine hair, a low bun, or a tighter hold. Big 6.5 suits thick hair, a loose bun, or sleeping in. Most people with mid-length hair start with the Big and keep a Skinny for the days it needs to stay put.

Sleeping in one

That's half the point. A loose bun in silk causes far less breakage overnight than an elastic, and it won't leave a kink in the morning. Pair it with the pillowcase and the hair that isn't tied up gets the same treatment.
